Project value - £25-£30 000
Build Time – 2 weeks
In 2022, as members of the Association of Professional Landscapers we were invited to submit plans and compete to win the opportunity and sponsorship to build a show garden at Gardeners World Live. Working alongside Julianne from Chasing Arcadia Garden Design we were 1 of 5 who were successful and went on to build a gardens within the show. The theme for the gardens was 'A Very British Affair' and led by Julianne we settled on a design inspired by the Suffolk Coastline – The Sea Garden was born!!
Inspired by the coast this was a functional garden which could be used for entertaining and relaxing featuring an outdoor kitchen built to reflect the fisherman’s huts at Aldeburgh beach with a green roof and constructed from reclaimed pallets, a bench built from an old rowing boat, a sunken garden where you could experience sand between your toes, water feature and rusty metal fencing and reclaimed oak sleepers were used to represent the groins you may find on any UK beach. The planting was hardy and windswept reflecting the harsh conditions of our seaside towns but created structure and interest, authentic driftwood was used to separate the spaces within the garden and it was furnished with chairs made from old sail boat sails.
We were thrilled to be awarded a Silver Merit for the garden and a huge thanks to our all of our sponsors listed below, during the design and build we were very aware of the issues around the sustainability of show gardens and at the end of the show we dismantled the garden and each element was re-used within a different project, the outdoor kitchen/fisherman’s hut is now being used by a lovely family for entertaining, the boat seat also found a home in someone’s garden, the fencing, sleepers, stones, water feature, plants and driftwood all went on to be used within a project we built in the year following the show.
